Early Childhood Centre gets the green light!

17 May 2016

BeachGrove Kaiapoi community continued its’ growth with the announcement of an Active Learner Early Childhood Centre to be built on site late last year. May 2016 sees the first dirt turned on the 430 square meter purpose designed and built complex, which is expected to be completed for the 2017 year intake.

Up to 68 children aged 0-5 will attend the centre that offers state of the art facilities and equipment, separate nursery and preschool areas all complimented by a large landscaped outdoor playground.  “The quality of the Active Learners programme offers a welcome addition to BeachGrove and Kaiapoi communities,” says Shane Fairmaid, CEO of BeachGrove Estates. “It is wonderful to have such committed and professional operators, essentially in our backyard! The centre very much compliments the local primary school that borders BeachGrove and we look forward to seeing Active Learners being a significant asset to the local community.”

Annie Avenell and Rachel Garden founded Active Learners Timaru in 2012. Since that time they have purchased Active Learners Leeston and are excited to bring Active Learners to BeachGrove Kaiapoi, satisfying the growing demand of high quality pre-school learning in the flourishing North Canterbury township.

The vision for Active Learners is underpinned by the Reggio Emilia philosophy together with Annie and Rachel’s first-hand understanding of the importance of the early years. They bring a combined wealth of experience to Active Learners. This experience ranges from teaching the early years through to primary, secondary and tertiary teaching, and encompasses other roles that include education advisors, heads of departments, and deputies and principals of primary and secondary schools. Annie has a Master’s degree in Educational Studies (Literacy) and Rachel has a Doctorate in Education examining academic excellence.

Annie and Rachel have very strong educational principles developed from their own research and experience that focuses on quality of care and exemplary educational outcomes for children. They view the image of the child as rich in experiences, capable, and competent. The Active Learners programme emerges from children’s interests and is developed through on-going negotiation involving teachers, children, and parents. These interests provoke children’s inquiry process for the project based learning that occurs in all Active Learners Centers.

Significant importance is also placed on the professional development of the staff at Active Learners. They do not consider their teachers as protective babysitters teaching basic skills to children but, rather, see them as learners along with the children. Thus, teachers are supported, valued for their experience and ideas, and seen as researchers. To this end, all staff are encouraged to regularly participate in professional development.

Active Learners welcome enquires and bookings for the early 2017 year intake. Up to 20 hours ECE free for all children 3-5 years with full and half day sessions available. Each child has an individual portfolio that tracks and monitors their development as well as an extensive school transition programme to ready each child for primary school.
